WhatsApp continues its relentless drive to incorporate an ever-expanding array of features, and the momentum remains unabated. A prime example of this is the latest addition to its repertoire. Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, recently revealed that the messaging platform under the Meta umbrella now boasts the capability for screen sharing during video calls.
The functionality is rather straightforward in its nature. This innovation empowers users to seamlessly share an array of content, spanning documents, images, and other elements present on their screens.
This advancement has been in the works for several months, having undergone rigorous testing by beta users since May. To access this capability, users need to simply tap on the designated Share icon. Subsequently, the choice becomes yours: whether to share the entirety of your screen or confine the sharing to a specific application. It's worth noting that this bears a notable resemblance to the screen sharing attributes inherent in platforms such as Zoom and Google Meet.
Speculation arises as to whether WhatsApp's motivation for this addition includes a strategic maneuver to encroach upon the business realm occupied by its aforementioned competitors. Though this possibility exists, the feature's utility extends beyond this, including scenarios where it could prove invaluable for aiding family members with technical support—a testament to its versatility that transcends mere presentations.
In line with its established pattern, the feature is being rolled out gradually to users, which means immediate availability might not be universal. It is slated to become accessible to all users across Android, iOS, and the Windows desktop client in due course.
In tandem with the screen sharing enhancement, WhatsApp has also introduced the option for landscape mode during video calls—a comprehensive move to enhance the user experience.
