Yesterday, MediaTek introduced a new processor for mid-range phones. Its trade name is Dimensity 1080 and it is also the successor of last year's Dimensity 920 chipset. Let us remind you that the Dimensity 920 powers, for example, the Redmi Note 11 Pro Plus phone or the Realme 9 Pro Plus model . The newly introduced processor has improved performance, efficiency and, above all, camera support.
So the Dimensity 1080 chipset has a few improvements, but let's take a look at its main specs and also what it will offer to mid-range phones. Initial information about the specifications of this chipset can be found, for example, on the XDA Developers website . At the outset, it is appropriate to say that it is an eight-core processor built on TSMC's 6nm production technology. The chipset has two Cortex-A78 cores with a frequency of up to 2.6 GHz and six Cortex-A55 cores with a clock speed of up to 2 GHz. Mali-G68 MC4 graphics complemented the cores. The processor supports 5G networks.
Perhaps the most significant changes and improvements are related to camera support. The new Dimensity 1080, or rather its ISP, can process image data with zero shutter lag from sensors with a resolution of up to 200 MPix. It also supports HDR video recording up to 4K resolution. There is also support for a main camera with up to four sensors.
The Dimensity 1080 offers support for LPDDR5 RAM and internal UFS 3.1 storage. For displays, there is ready support for FullHD+ resolution and up to 120 Hz refresh rate. In terms of connectivity, the chipset is ready to support Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2 and dual 5G networks. Gaming support is the same as last year's Dimensity 920, and so is the APU. And when could we expect the first phones with this processor? MediaTek says that the first devices will be launched in the 4th quarter of this year. Realme, Poco and Vivo have shown interest in the new chipset.
