Qualcomm introduced Snapdragon W5 and W5+ Gen1 processors

The vast majority of smartphone manufacturers are now fully focused on the new Snapdragon 8+ Gen1 flagship processor. We can already find it in a fairly decent line of phones and we will certainly see it in other phones. This chipset was introduced by Qualcomm in May together with the Snapdragon 7 Gen1 chipset, which is tailored for mid-range phones. After its launch, it was speculated that it would appear in the Nothing Phone (1) model , but as we know, it didn't happen. And since smartphones are already covered by Qualcomm's processors, it's time to launch chipsets for wearables.

So the new chipsets for wearables are here and they are Snapdragon W5 Gen1 and Snapdragon W5+ Gen1. These two processors will replace the Snapdragon Wear 4100+ chipset. Built on the 4nm manufacturing process, they will offer significant improvements to Qualcomm's wearable offerings.

QUALCOMM ANNOUNCED THE MAIN SPECIFICATIONS OF THE NEW PROCESSORS 

Qualcomm says the new processors have up to twice the performance of the Snapdragon Wear 4100+ platform. The first of the chipsets is intended for cheaper or simpler wearables such as smart watches for children or fitness bracelets. The Snapdragon W5+ Gen1, on the other hand, is intended for premium wearables. And probably the main difference between the two chipsets is that the "plus" model has an added AON coprocessor. It is intended for working with sound, for health monitoring functions and detection of keywords and notifications. Last but not least, to support machine learning. Unit U55 will provide this.

The Snapdragon W5+ Gen1 consists of four Cortex-A53 cores and one new-generation Cortex-M55 core in the coprocessor. The graphics are handled by the A702 GPU with a clock speed of 1 GHz. The memory is updated to support LPDDR4 at 2133 Mhz. Thanks to this assembly, the new processor is more energy efficient. In addition, it also ensures longer battery life and durability, up to 50%. This is due to the fact that it takes up 30% less space than the previous generation.

Qualcomm also confirmed that in connection with the release of new wearable chipsets, it worked with Google to optimize Wear OS for these new processors. In addition, Qualcomm representatives say that they have partnered with Comple and Pegatro to create a Snapdragon W5+ Gen1 reference watch that will facilitate and accelerate the development of other new products. The first watches with new chipsets will be presented by Oppo and Mobvoi, and Qualcomm claims that several other models of wearables are already in the works.
