Sri Lanka Implements Mandatory IMEI Registration System for Mobile Devices

Important Deadline

January 29, 2025: All new mobile devices must be registered to function on Sri Lankan networks.

The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) has announced a significant change in mobile device regulations with the implementation of a mandatory International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) registration system. This new initiative aims to regulate the use of mobile devices across the country's telecommunications networks.

Key Requirements

  • All SIM-enabled devices must be registered through the new online system
  • Devices must be purchased from vendors with valid TRCSL Vendor Licenses
  • All devices must have TRCSL-approved IMEI numbers
  • Imported devices require approval from multiple government institutions

Impact on Existing Users

Important Note: Devices already connected to networks before January 28, 2025, will not be affected by these new regulations.

Registration Process for Imported Devices

Individuals bringing devices into Sri Lanka must obtain clearance through the new equipment system. This process requires approval from:

  • Sri Lanka Customs
  • Department of Import and Export Control
  • Ministry of Defense
  • TRCSL

How to Verify Your Device's IMEI

IMEI Verification Process:

  1. Send an SMS to 1909
  2. Use the format: IMEI [space] [15-digit IMEI number]
  3. Wait for confirmation response

Consumer Guidelines

Before Purchasing a Device:

  • Verify the vendor has a valid TRCSL Vendor License
  • Check the device's IMEI number is TRCSL-approved
  • Keep purchase documentation for future reference
  • Ensure the device is new and properly sealed

Implementation Timeline

January 28, 2025: Last day for unregistered devices to connect to networks

January 29, 2025: System goes live; all new devices must be registered

Post-Implementation: Only registered devices will function on Sri Lankan networks
