This year is a significant one for the Internationale Funkausstellung in Berlin, better known as IFA. In 2024, IFA is celebrating its 100th anniversary. The first IFA event happened in 1924 and primarily focused on the major advancements in the radio industry. In fact, "Internationale Funkausstellung" loosely translates to "international radio exhibition," but the event has since expanded to showcase a wide variety of tech innovations. In 2024, IFA covers Android smartphones, smart home devices, televisions, security cameras, household appliances, and more.
Android Authority was on the ground at IFA 2024, bringing you the latest and greatest in tech. Here are the winners of our Best of IFA 2024 Awards!
As the smartphone industry evolves, fewer companies launch new devices at general tech events like IFA. Many prefer hosting their own events to take center stage. However, a few smartphones still made an impact at this year's show, with the best being:
The HONOR Magic V3 stole the spotlight at IFA 2024 as the world's thinnest foldable phone. When folded, it measures only 9.2mm in thickness (excluding the camera bump), making it slimmer than the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra and much thinner than its main foldable competitor, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6.
Besides its ultra-thin design, the HONOR Magic V3 also boasts a solid camera system, including a telephoto lens with 3.5x optical zoom. Combined with high-quality displays, fast wired and wireless charging, and an IPX8 water resistance rating, this device is shaping up to be an excellent foldable smartphone. It will soon be available in Europe for €1,999 (~$2,217) and in the UK for £1,699 (~$2,231). However, HONOR has no plans to bring it to the US market.
Although TCL didn’t showcase a foldable device or make any "world’s first" claims, it introduced an innovative approach to smartphone displays with the TCL 50 Pro NXTPAPER 5G. This device is part of TCL's NXTPAPER lineup, which features displays with a near glare-free, paper-like feel, ideal for long reading sessions and reduced eye strain.
The standout feature of this phone is the "NXTPAPER Key," a button that allows users to activate "Max Ink Mode," transforming the phone into a “dumb” device by locking out most apps and turning the display into an e-ink-like monochrome screen. This feature promotes digital detox while also conserving battery life. The TCL 50 Pro NXTPAPER 5G will be available in Europe for €299 (~$331), but TCL hinted at a potential US launch in 2025.
Stay tuned for more updates and in-depth reviews on the latest tech from IFA 2024!
