Yesterday, Nothing announced its highly anticipated new Phone (2a) Plus. It builds on the popular Nothing phone and brings improvements in three key areas. Performance, camera and design. Phone (2a) Plus is powered by the world-exclusive MediaTek 7350 Pro 5G processor for faster and smoother operation. There is also a new front camera with a resolution of 50MP and new color variants reminiscent of metal.
“Following the success of the Phone (2a) , which was a breath of fresh air in the mid-range phone segment and became our best-selling phone, we are delighted to introduce the Phone (2a) Plus. This improved variant is equipped with a world-exclusive processor. Further improved front camera and new metal design. The Phone (3) won't be launched until 2025, so the Phone (2a) Plus is for everyone who liked the Phone (2a) but was looking for even more performance. ” said Carl Pei, CEO and co-founder of Nothing.
Phone (2a) Plus is offered in two new for Nothing color variants. And that in metallic gray and innovative black. The metallic design refers to mechanical machines and offers a new premium expression of Nothing's design language. And at the same time, it highlights improvements to the Phone (2a) Plus.
Inheriting the design story of the Phone (2a), the Phone (2a) Plus was created at the intersection of engineering and craftsmanship. By integrating the components into the phone's exterior, Nothing created an anthropomorphic look where the cameras inside the NFC coil represent two eyes sitting in front of a brain-like intelligent and communication center. The circular grid system design centralizes the camera. This ensures a complete and pleasing appearance that makes the Phone (2a) Plus another mobile icon.
The secret to the high performance of the Phone (2a) Plus lies in its MediaTek Dimensity 7350 Pro 5G processor. This one is a world exclusive for Nothing. As Nothing is well aware of the increasing emphasis on mobile gaming, this processor has been co-designed to be every gamer's dream.
Thanks to the top TSMC 4nm Gen 2 technology with 8 cores working at a frequency of up to 3.0 GHz. That's almost 10% faster processor than in Phone (2a). Everything is now smoother and nothing slows down the phone. The processor is supported by an ARM Mali-G610 MC4 graphics chip with a clock speed of 1.3 Ghz, which is even up to 30% faster when playing games.
The Smart Clean technology developed by the Nothing team also contributes to maintaining high performance. It regularly cleans unused system files, NTFS optimization for lightning-fast file transfers and RAM Booster technology for up to a generous 20 GB of operating memory.
Since the launch of the Phone (2a) in March, Nothing has already released seven software updates with many improvements specifically for taking photos and recording videos. These updates fine-tune the camera experience by improving color accuracy, color saturation, and color consistency. In addition, they improve the accuracy of bokeh effects, the speed of the photo-taking application itself, and overall resulting photos.
For the first time ever, there are three 50MP cameras on the Nothing phone. The main change happened with the front camera, when the resolution increased from 32 MP to 50 MP and it can record 4K videos at 30 FPS.
The Phone (2a) Plus thus boasts a large 50MP main camera with an aperture of 1 f1/88. Furthermore, an ultra wide-angle camera with 50 MP resolution and a 114º field of view and now also a front 50 MP camera for stellar selfies and quality video calls. All three cameras support full 50 MP resolution, HDR photo capture as well as 4K video recording.
The main camera is not a problem even in poor lighting conditions. And the night photos are just as detailed as the daytime ones. It can also record stunning 4K videos, supported by optical image stabilization, electronic image stabilization, and action mode for smooth shots even when moving fast.
To make the Phone (2a) Plus uncompromising in its price category, Nothing combines elite hardware with state-of-the-art software. Nothing TrueLens Engine with AI Vivid Mode consists of advanced algorithms. These create realistic photos rich in color and detail. Co-developed with Google, Ultra XDR technology improves illumination in challenging lighting conditions by adjusting pixel brightness up to five times, ensuring faithful images in every situation.
Other camera features include Motion Capture for blur-free action photos. Furthermore, night mode for improved photography in low light and AI Portrait Optimiser for perfect group shots.
In version 2.6, the Nothing system has expanded its library with even more functional widgets that allow easy interaction on both the home screen and the lock screen. And they are supplemented with previews and animations for multiple levels of information.
Following the ChatGPT integration that took place earlier this year, Nothing has developed the News Reporter widget. It's a daily digest that uses artificial intelligence technology to summarize the day's news in a simple and intuitive format, read aloud by Nothing's CFO, Tim Holbrow. This is available for all Nothing phones through the Nothing Widgets app on the Google Play Store.
The widget provides featured news from eight selectable genres including: Business, Entertainment, General News, Health, Science, Sports and Technology. The artificial intelligence system then summarizes news from English-language sources by category and converts them into audio. Each article summary is 1 minute long, with a total of 8 articles available daily. Every morning the widget refreshes with a new set. News Reporter works immediately without registration.
The Phone (2a) Plus comes with Android 14 and with three years of support for major system updates and four years of support for security updates.
Phone (2a) Plus has fast 50W charging, thanks to which you can get all-day battery life in less than 20 minutes. That's almost 10% faster than the original Phone (2a). The battery has a capacity of 5,000 mAh and will keep the phone running for two whole days on a single charge. Nothing also guarantees that it will retain more than 90% of its capacity even after 1,000 charge cycles.
The flexible 6.7" flexible AMOLED display, which enables accurate reproduction of 1.07 billion colors with minimal consumption, provides a quality spectacle. With a peak brightness of 1,300 nits, the Phone (2a) Plus provides an uncompromising viewing experience even in the brightest outdoor conditions.
With Active Matrix technology (AM in the word AMOLED), the display of the Phone (2a) Plus has precise control over each individual pixel, which contributes to better image quality without draining the battery.
The Phone (2a) Plus maintains the thinnest bezels among the Nothing phones, measuring just 2.1mm symmetrically on all four sides of the display. This results in a very impressive display-to-body ratio of 91.65%.
The display does not lack an adaptive refresh rate of up to 120 Hz, which smoothly adapts to the content, and the display detects the user's touch even with a frequency of 240 Hz. Thanks to this, the phone responds to the touch immediately.
Glyph light interface
On the back of the Phone (2a) we find the iconic Glyph light interface. This is a new way of interacting with a smartphone, which encourages people not to constantly look at their phone's display and to recognize key notifications and information based on light and sound signals. Glyph still retains features from Phone (2a), such as Glyph Timer or Glyph Progress, which can also be used by third-party developers to integrate into their applications.
The (2a) Plus phone is available in gray and black: 12 + 256GB (£399)(About LKR 130,148)
In London, the Nothing Store Soho will be the first place in the world where interested parties can purchase the new phone - from 11am BST on Saturday 3rd August.
