5 myths about phone batteries and heat

It is quite common for mobile phones to overheat when used excessively or when charging. However, this risk is much higher during the summer heat. Just leave the phone in direct sunlight for a while or go on a long car journey with the navigation on and music playing at the same time. Prolonged exposure to high temperatures can permanently damage the battery. But also other components. However, it is still not entirely clear how to properly handle a mobile phone in the heat. In addition, there are many myths about this topic. That's why we bring you the most common falsehoods about dealing with batteries in the summer. So here are 5 myths about phone batteries and heat.

MYTH 1: YOUR PHONE BATTERY IS JUST AS POWERFUL NO MATTER HOW HOT IT IS OUTSIDE

Battery health affects not only how much the phone is in use and what applications are currently running on it. Ambient temperature is also an important factor. Just as the phone drains faster when it's cold and freezing outside, hot summer days also have an adverse effect on battery health. Exposure to high temperatures may cause the phone to self-discharge. "Overheating negatively affects the life of the battery itself. The ideal temperature for mobile phones is between 15 and 20 degrees Celsius. Long-term exposure to low or high temperatures does not benefit the condition of the battery," explains Radim Tlapák, director of the Batteryshop.cz online store.

MYTH 2: OVERHEATED BATTERIES MUST BE COOLED QUICKLY

A sharp change in temperature is not good for the battery, on the contrary, it can damage it much more seriously. If the phone shows you that it is overheating, or you yourself feel that it is hot to the touch, definitely do not try to cool it down, for example in the refrigerator or freezer. The battery needs gradual cooling. Ideally, close all running applications, turn on airplane mode or turn off the phone completely, and also remove the protective cover from it, which prevents spontaneous cooling. Then put the mobile phone in a shady place for some time, preferably by placing it on the shortest side so that air reaches as much surface as possible. An air conditioner or a fan can also be a good helper, which speeds up the gradual cooling.

MYTH 3: ALL PHONES HAVE BUILT-IN OVERHEATING PROTECTION

It is true that many newer smartphones have a built-in temperature sensor and overheating protection. But this does not mean that the mobile battery is automatically protected from high temperatures and cannot be damaged. The function should only be preventive and informative for the user - thanks to it, the phone can turn off or go into power saving mode so that the processor is not overwhelmed and does not heat up unnecessarily. If you are not sure if your phone can do this, you can download one of the apps that monitor the phone's status and temperature. At the moment when the system alerts you to a dangerous situation, it is advisable to give your mobile phone a break, turn it off and let it cool down slowly. During the hot summer months, don't carry phones in protective cases or covers that don't have ventilation holes, as this too will overheat them unnecessarily.

MYTH 4: USING THE PHONE WHILE CHARGING DOES NOT AFFECT THE BATTERY

People often mistakenly think that they can use the phone carefree even while charging. The more often we charge the smartphone, the faster the battery life decreases. And when we use the phone to play games or stream videos while charging, the charging time increases . "At the moment when high summer temperatures are added to charging and intensive use, the battery is unnecessarily overloaded and can be irreversibly damaged. This is also because the exposure of batteries to temperatures above 60 degrees can end in their explosion and subsequent fire," adds Radim Tlapák from Batteryshop.cz.

MYTH 5: USING POWER-HUNGRY APPS IN THE SUMMER ISN'T BAD FOR YOUR BATTERY

Applications such as games, but also navigation or playing music and videos heat up the phone the most. When more of them are running at the same time, the processor and battery overheat more easily. Summer also includes, among other things, traveling on vacation. And if you go there by car, you often use mobile applications such as the already mentioned navigation or music player. The phone is usually placed in a holder on the dashboard, where it cannot avoid direct sunlight. Even for several hours at a time, which can cause a sudden discharge of the battery or damage it. The same is true when staying in nature or by the pool. The phone should never lie directly in the sun, it is always better to leave it in a bag or backpack.

Also try to avoid playing games or streaming videos in tropical temperatures. And only turn on mobile data when you're actually using the phone. Even connecting to the Internet in hot weather can cause the mobile phone to overheat and slow down.
