Snapdragon 8 Gen2 is officially here

After a very long period of speculation and predictions by tipsters, one of the key events of this year has come to light. Just as many expected the launch of the Snapdragon 8 Gen2 flagship processor to take place somewhat earlier than usual, it did. The newly launched chipset marks the start of a battle for many smartphone manufacturers. It's a battle to see who among them will be the first to launch their premium phone with this processor. And there are many adepts.

WHAT DOES THE NEW SNAPDRAGON 8 GEN2 PROCESSOR OFFER? 

In a few words, you could say that the Snapdragon 8 Gen2 has received some solid improvements. It is primarily the top ARMv9 architecture, as well as support for Wi-Fi 7 and ray-tracing. Exactly as the tipsters estimated, Qualcomm did not switch to 3nm production technology, but remained with 4nm technology. But let's look at other specifications as well.

The premium Snapdragon 8 Gen2 chipset consists of eight cores. The first of these is an ARM Cortex-X3 clocked at 3.2 GHz. It is followed by four powerful cores clocked at 2.8 GHz for multi-threaded workloads and three efficient cores clocked at 2.0 GHz. This makes the CPU 35% faster and 40% more energy efficient than the previous generation. The new Adreno graphics promise up to 25% more performance and 45% more efficiency.

Qualcomm jumped on the ray-tracing trend, an important step for the mobile gaming scene. In addition, the GPU supports Vulkan 1.23 as well as OpenGL ES 3.2. There is also support for faster memory technologies, including LPDDR5X with a clock frequency of up to 4200 MHz and the new UFS 4.0 storage. As for displays, we can find support for QHD+ resolution with up to 144 Hz or 4K resolution with 60 Hz. Snapdragon 8 Gen2 also supports external displays up to 4K resolution at 60 Hz. There is support for HDR10+ and Dolby Vision. AV1 video decoding is also supported, allowing streaming up to 8K at 60fps.

IMPROVED CAMERA SUPPORT 

The manufacturer did not forget about the cameras either. The Snapdragon 8 Gen2 therefore has an 18-bit ISP chip that supports up to three 36 MP cameras or one 200 MP sensor. There is also support for 108 MP sensors with zero shutter lag. It can record 8K HDR video at 30 fsp and take 64MP photos. The processor can also handle 4K/120 fsp video and slow motion 720p/960 fsp video. There is support for HDR10+, HLG and Dolby Vision. The manufacturer has also improved support for the latest Sony and Samsung sensors, which are optimized to work with the ISP chip.

Artificial intelligence support is also significantly improved, which can handle even more complex tasks such as language translation in real time. The processor also includes the X70 modem for increasing 5G performance. It also supports two active 5G SIMs, which means that users can use two different 5G networks simultaneously. And of course there is support for Bluetooth 5.3, USB 3.1 and Quick Charge 5. The first phones with the new Snapdragon 8 Gen2 chipset will appear this year. For example, Asus, Honor, iQOO, Motorola , Xiaomi, OnePlus , Oppo and many others are interested in it.
