New Snapdragons for high-end and midrange categories

New Snapdragons for high-end and midrange categories

So we finally got the eagerly awaited new Snapdragon chipsets. With them, Qualcomm not only intends to maintain its position in the highest high-end sphere, but mainly to gain lost positions in the middle class. The new generation of Dimensity from Mediatek has been flooding him there lately. They waited for Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 as if they had mercy because they did not have the correct answer. But big things are also expected from the new Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1. So let's take a closer look at both Snapdragons.

SNAPDRAGON 8+ GEN 1

First, of course, let's take a look at the top of the food chain. Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 is an improvement of the original model, where the transition of production from Samsung to TSMC is a fundamental change. This preserves 4 nm lithography, but it is said that consumption and heating will change significantly. Performance should increase by a decent 10% with a slight increase in frequencies (to 3.2 GHz for the CPU and 10% for the GPU), but the economy should be up to 30% better. That doesn't sound bad at all, and on top of that we get 20% more powerful AI.

Otherwise, everything is the same, so the chipset can handle up to 16 GB LPDDR5 RAM (3200 MHz). Or QHD + display resolution at 144 Hz, along with 10-bit rendering and HDR10 +. The Snapdragon X65 modem will offer theoretical speeds of up to 10Gbps and the FastConnect 6900 will take care of Wi-Fi 6 / 6E up to 3.6 GHz. Photo processing is the domain of the 18-bit Spectra Triple ISP with support for up to 200 Mpx sensors and 8K video with 30 fps. But that's just the tip of the iceberg, of course.

Better operating characteristics will certainly be crucial, but we will still have to wait for the first real tests. The new Snapdragons 8+ Gen 1 will not get into the first phones until the third quarter of this year. The list of confirmed candidates is very long and it is basically easier to ask who will not use it from the big names…

SNAPDRAGON 7 GEN 1

Perhaps even more interesting is the novelty for the middle class, ie Snapdragon 7 Gen 1. It is finally also built on a modern 4 nm lithographic base. Which is a nice change after 6 nm (SD778G) or 5 nm (SD780G). Interestingly, however, Qualcomm remained with Samsung's factories in this case, leaving TSMC with only high-end chips. But Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 also has a very solid foundation. The Cortex-A710 Prime main core at 2.4 GHz will be complemented by the Cortex-A710 Performance trio at 2.36 GHz and the Cortex-A510 Efficiency quadruple at 1.8 GHz.

The graphics will be taken care of by Adreno 662, which promises about a 20% increase in performance compared to SD778G. Likewise, the new 7th Gen AI chip is supposed to have up to 30% more power. However, the support of other conveniences was not neglected either. As needed up to 16GB LPDDR5 RAM, FullHD + display up to 144Hz or 14-bit Spectra Triple ISP. Players will then enjoy better performance thanks to the Adreno Frame Motion Engine. Well, connectivity with the Snapdragon X62 5G modem will also be on the rise. Like Bluetooth 5.3, Wi-Fi 6E, support 200 Mpx sensor or 4K HDR video. The premiere also awaits the Android SE and Trusted Management Engine security platforms.

And we probably won't even wait too long for the first phones with this chipset. In reality, only a few weeks and the OPPO Reno8 Pro, for example, should be the first to appear in just a few days. So we will be very curious.
