The rivalry of big players in the field of mobile chipsets is just beginning to warm up, but in the future, the year 2022 will definitely fill it. After many years, the Taiwanese Mediatek has its horse in the high end and is thus ready to challenge the long-term dominance of Qualcomm. We already have the first phones with Snapdragons 8 Gen 1 in the world (for example, Xiaomi 12 introduced yesterday) and the news with Dimensity 9000 will definitely follow very soon. The big names in the mobile industry have already officially declared their interest, so there will definitely be few of them. Should Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 begin to worry about its status?
From the first tests, it doesn't look like any abysmal differences, although of course we don't have real phone tests in hand. The first benchmarks show very balanced scores in overall performance, with Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 at the top in the graphics area and Dimensity 9000 in the AI category. The chipset from Qualcomm will also probably have a better ISP chip for photo processing. Although Mediatek received very praise from companies like Oppo in this area as well. On the other hand, the Dimensity 9000 will probably claim a victory in terms of consumption, because the 4 nm TSMC production process is reportedly a class better.
But it will also fight the price, because we finally have the first price comparison of these novelties in our hands . Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 should be available for $ 120-130, while Dimensity 9000 is only available for $ 100-110. At a time of minimal margins (except for Apple) and phone price differences, this can be a very significant plus. Especially if the chipsets are basically comparable and each of them is a little better only somewhere. Of course, user prejudices can still play a role. Mediatek still has a slightly tarnished reputation from many in the past. But it must be added that it has been completely undeserved for a long time. So the Clash of the Titans will still be very interesting.
