Samsung smartphones banned in Russia

Samsung enthusiasts living in Russia will have to reconsider their choice of smartphones in the future. The Korean firm is facing intense lawsuits in the European market over allegations of patent infringement related to its Samsung Pay service. Russian courts have first ruled to stop importing and selling up to 61 models of smartphones running Samsung Pai, including the top models Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 and Galaxy Z Flip3. This is due to allegations that Samsung Pay infringes the patent of the Swiss mobile payment company Sqwin Sa.
Interestingly, the problem arose in 2013, when Viktor Gulchenko filed a patent for an online transaction system. This system was registered in April 2019 and provided by Sqwin Sa. Samsung Pay was introduced in 2015 and appeared on the Russian market a year later, in 2016. Samsung Pay quickly took root in the country. Cashless wallet - the third most popular system of contactless payments in Russia. It now accounts for 17% of the total number of transactions. In Apple Pay 30 percent and Google Pay dominates with 32 percent of payments. According to lawyers, the latter two services may also fall victim to the Sqwin Sa patent.
In July, a court barred defendants from Samsung Electronics Rus Company and Samsung Electronics from using their products, including Samsung Pay. It also prohibits the importation of these devices into Russia, as well as their sale or even introduction into civil circulation. The devices are not disclosed, but we assume that the list includes many Galaxy smartphones with NFC support. After all, the availability of NFC is an important step for a cashless payment system. The list includes the aforementioned flagship smartphones and even the Samsung Galaxy J5.
