Google Pixel 10 Series and the Powerful New Tensor G5 Chip

The upcoming Google Pixel 10 series is set to bring substantial technological improvements, largely driven by the all-new Tensor G5 chip. Recently leaked details reveal insights into the chip's new CPU and GPU architectures, enhancing performance and efficiency. The leak, shared by tech insider Kamila Wojciechowska on Android Authority, provides a glimpse into Google's transformative approach to chip design.

Switching to TSMC for Tensor G5 Production

One of the most significant shifts in the Tensor G5 chip for the Pixel 10 series is Google’s move from Samsung to TSMC for production. This change enables the chip to leverage TSMC's advanced 3-nanometer N3E technology, focusing on power efficiency and enhanced performance. Such a move is an effort by Google to position its SoC as a competitor in the high-end smartphone market.

Tensor G5 Processor Cluster: Redesign for Speed and Efficiency

The new Tensor G5 utilizes a unique 1+5+2 core layout, diverging from its predecessor’s 1+3+4 arrangement. At the core of this design lies the main ARM Cortex-X4, supported by five Cortex-A720 mid-range cores and two Cortex-A520 low-power cores. This configuration aims to enhance the speed and performance of the Google Pixel 10, even though some question the choice to use the slightly dated Cortex-X4 core instead of newer models.

Advanced GPU Technology: Google Pixel 10 and Imagination Tech Partnership

In an exciting development, Google has partnered with Imagination Technologies to replace the ARM Mali GPU with a dual-core DXT-48-1536 GPU for the Tensor G5. This new graphics processing unit, clocked at 1.1 GHz, includes support for ray tracing and GPU virtualization, offering a significant leap in graphics performance for the Google Pixel 10 series. While it may not surpass visual performance on the Snapdragon 8 Elite or Dimensity 9400, this is a promising upgrade.

Enhanced NPU Performance for AI Capabilities

The Tensor G5’s NPU (Neural Processing Unit) delivers better AI processing capabilities, reaching either 18 or 9 TOPS (INT8 or FP16). Although this brings a 14% boost over the G4, it’s a relatively modest increase. The chip measures 121mm², slightly larger than its Apple A18 Pro counterpart, indicating a robust hardware setup focused on maximizing Pixel’s AI capabilities.

Looking Ahead: Tensor G6 and Google's Future in Chip Development

Despite these significant upgrades, the Tensor G5 still trails behind flagship competitors. However, Google is already developing the next-generation Tensor G6 chip, codenamed “Malibu,” which is expected to advance the Pixel series’ standing in the high-performance chip arena. For now, Pixel 10 enthusiasts can anticipate a more powerful and responsive experience.

The Google Pixel 10 series represents a notable step forward in Google's technological evolution. As the company continues to innovate, the new Tensor G5 chip promises enhanced performance, marking a promising future for the Pixel lineup.
