OnePlus Faces New Patent Dispute With InterDigital in Germany

Many tech enthusiasts may recall the time two years ago when Oppo, OnePlus, and Vivo were forced to exit the German market. This was due to a legal battle with the Nokia brand over patent agreements that had expired in 2021. Nokia filed multiple lawsuits against these companies, winning them all in the same year.

OnePlus Faces New Patent Dispute With InterDigital in Germany

Earlier this year, Oppo, OnePlus, and Vivo entered into a licensing agreement with Nokia, covering essential patents related to 5G and other mobile communication technologies. With this settlement, both parties agreed to end all pending legal disputes globally. The resolution was particularly important for OnePlus, as it allowed them to move forward with pre-orders for their OnePlus 12 flagship model, much to the delight of German fans.

OnePlus Faces Another Patent Dispute

Unfortunately, history is repeating itself for OnePlus. Just months after re-entering the German market, the company finds itself embroiled in another patent dispute. This time, however, the conflict is with InterDigital, a company specializing in research and development of wireless technologies, including 5G networks.

OnePlus Faces New Patent Dispute With InterDigital in Germany

InterDigital has accused OnePlus of using its patented technologies without proper authorization, which has resulted in a sales ban of OnePlus phones in Germany. According to reports from Allround-PC, OnePlus's online store in Germany is once again without phones. However, other products such as the OnePlus Pad2, Buds Pro 3, and Watch 2 remain available for purchase. The sales ban appears to apply only to devices that support 5G networks.

It remains unclear how this dispute will be resolved or when phone sales will resume in Germany. The previous legal battle with Nokia lasted for two years, raising concerns that this could be a prolonged issue for the company.

OnePlus Responds to the Situation

OnePlus has issued a statement in response to the ongoing situation: "OnePlus places great importance on intellectual property rights and fair access to standard core patents, which is critical to fostering innovation in the industry. We will continue to engage with InterDigital and hope to resolve this matter amicably. In the meantime, our commitment to Europe remains unchanged, and we will continue to provide our users with excellent products and services."

While OnePlus continues to navigate this new patent dispute with InterDigital, the sales ban on 5G-enabled devices in Germany presents a significant hurdle for the company. It remains to be seen how the legal battle will unfold and whether OnePlus will be able to resolve this issue swiftly. For now, German fans of the brand will have to wait for the return of OnePlus smartphones to the market.
