HMD has once again captured attention with the launch of the new HMD Fusion model, following the recent debut of the pink clamshell Barbie Phone. The HMD Fusion is perfect for those who fondly remember the era of modular phones or desire a device that is easy to repair and customize to their needs. This new model brilliantly combines these two features.
The concept of a modular or easily repairable phone is not entirely new to HMD's portfolio. Prior to the HMD Fusion, the manufacturer introduced the Skyline model, known for its easy repairability and the ability to replace the back cover. Similarly, the HMD Fusion comes with what HMD refers to as "Fusion Outfits".
These are essentially interchangeable covers that can add various useful features, such as wireless charging, enhanced protection, durability, or a ring light for brighter selfies. The covers are attached using smart pins located on the back of the device. Additionally, HMD allows users to 3D print their own enclosure designs through the open-source HMD Fusion Development Toolkit. The first official "Fusion Outfits" from HMD are expected to go on sale by the end of the fourth quarter of this year.
Another key feature of the HMD Fusion phone is its easy repairability. Like the Skyline model, it features a semi-transparent plastic casing that allows users to quickly access the battery, screen, or other parts that may need repair. Moreover, HMD has committed to offering replacement parts through iFixit for up to seven years, making it an excellent choice for users seeking a long-lasting phone.
The HMD Fusion also boasts impressive specifications. It features a 6.56-inch LCD display with a resolution of 1612 × 720 pixels, a 90Hz refresh rate, and a maximum brightness of up to 600 nits. The device is powered by the Snapdragon 4 Gen2 chipset, paired with 4GB/6GB/8GB/12GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage, expandable up to 1TB. Connectivity options include 5G SA/NSA, dual 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 ac (2.4 GHz/5 GHz), Bluetooth 5.1, GPS, GLONASS, Beidou, and USB-C. The fingerprint sensor is conveniently located on the edge of the device, and the phone is IP54 certified for resistance.
The HMD Fusion is equipped with a 5000 mAh battery that supports 33W fast charging. It runs on Android 14, with the manufacturer promising two OS updates and three years of security patches. In terms of photography, the device features a primary 108 MP camera with EIS and a 2 MP depth sensor. The front camera has a 50 MP sensor. The HMD Fusion will first be available in the European market, priced at 249 euros, and will later be released in the American market.
